Wonderful book. Just wish there was more on the history of Kate Bush's ancestors rather than on her for even in the early 1980s she was already considered a genius and we knew that she was different and there was all sorts of speculation on why that was. This book adds to that conjecture without leading us to the truth. But those that came before her - they are fascinating and worthy of deeper analysis. 88 pages is just not enough.
For me, Kate has always belonged to some kind of Victorialand. She has always been of another time, another place, beyond this life with her unique 'otherness'. This book pinpoints places important to her, not least Welling, Bexley and, above all, East Wickham Farmhouse. I'm certain it is a sense of this place that gives you a little understanding of her ethereal, otherwordly presence.
Both are linked.
This powerful, entertaining and original book, traces back the family and folk history of Kate Bush to reveal for the first time the full, gripping and bizarre story which made her what she is.
From her pagan and savage Saxon roots through 1,400 years in the "witch country" Essex...Henry Bush who scandalised the Victorian village of Pebmarsh ...the tragedy of 15 year old Jemina Bush ... Kate's grandfather Joe Bush and his courageous ordeal in Wormwood Scrubs ... to Kate's own remarkable upbringing, lonely adolescence and spectacular rise to fame.
The back cover of the book shows
Pebmarsh churchyard where generations of
Kate's ancestors are buried.
Kate's father was an exceptionally determined student who won a scholarship to Grays grammar school and went on to medical school. He graduated in 1943 and
married Hannah Daly, a staff nurse at Long Grove Hospital in Epsom, three years his senior and an Irish farmer's daughter. Dr. Bush became a GP in Bexley and then Welling. His new home was the 350 year old East Wickham Farmhouse.
East Wickham Farmhouse was allegedly haunted by a Victorian serving maid.
Kate's grandparents on her paternal side were Annie and Joe. They married on August 2 1919 and moved into hr father's home at 6 North Road, South Ockenden, Essex, a tiny two storey house squeezed between the general store and village post office.
On April 4 1920 Robert John Bush, Kate's father, was born.
Kate signed recording and publishing contracts with EMI for a modest £3,500 advance and left school in the lower sixth...
