Featured in Brian Eno's More Dark Than Shark
This 1980 mixed media work includes two 3-dimensional boxes within it, creating extraordinary depth and sculptural presence. Used for page 59 of the legendary book More Dark Than Shark, the page is entitled "There are scenes, There are blues".
The print of this piece was enclosed with a limited number of Brian Eno's album "More Blank Than Frank" on EG Records - a companion to the aforementioned book. Probably the most famous piece to come from the book.
Signed and dated 1980 - signed under the image to the right. Titled under the left side: "Third Uncle (Part Three)...These are Scenes..."
Great condition. The three-dimensional construction creates layers of meaning and visual depth that photographs simply cannot capture. This piece must be seen in person to fully appreciate its complexity and beauty.
Mills used mixed media to create textures and surfaces that shift as light moves across them. The incorporation of actual dimensional elements - boxes that project from the surface - was revolutionary for book illustration and album art at the time.
Watch Russell Mills talk about his artistic process and philosophy
Russell Mills, born 1952, remains today a seriously underrated artist. While he is also a musician, it is his visual art that is utterly captivating. He was THE illustrator for book and music covers in the UK during the 1980s. Only Andrzej Klimowski can claim to share that title.
Mills designed the groundbreaking David Sylvian CD boxset "Weatherbox" and numerous other Sylvian titles. The list of his commissions is almost endless:
He moved from Vauxhall, London to the Lake District, but the work from that golden era - the early 1980s - stands the test of time. It is beautiful and waiting to be discovered by future generations. This "Third Uncle" work is one of the best known and most important from that era.
"In a way he reminds me of a modern day Kurt Schwitters. A kind of Schwitters for the modern world. Both famous artists working in the Lake District; both making timeless abstract pieces. Dada meets today; Ambleside unites them."
I'm sure his work will be re-evaluated and the prices will sky-rocket. Until then think of this as a wonderful investment which would look astonishing on any wall.
After 41 years with my beloved partner, I find myself in the difficult position of parting with treasures I never imagined selling. This Russell Mills masterpiece has been a constant source of inspiration and beauty in our home - a piece we have cherished and protected for decades.
I am offering it now, reluctantly, to create stability during an impossibly difficult time. I hope it finds a home with someone who will appreciate its extraordinary beauty and historical significance as much as we have.
