It’s a practical release as much as a creative one. At the time, Sylvian’s catalogue wasn’t as readily available in the US, so pairing the two made sense commercially. But it also changes the listening experience — moving from the structured, vocal-led material of Brilliant Trees into the more abstract, drifting pieces from Words With The Shaman in a single sequence.
The recordings themselves feature the same core group that defined Sylvian’s early solo work, including Jon Hassell, Holger Czukay, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Steve Jansen. Their contributions are key to the sound here — from Hassell’s treated trumpet to Czukay’s tape and radio experiments — giving both parts of the release a shared atmosphere despite their different approaches.
This configuration remained in circulation through represses into the mid-1990s, but it stands apart from standard editions of Brilliant Trees. For collectors, it’s not just another pressing — it’s a distinct US-only way of presenting this period of Sylvian’s work.
