One of the best-loved comedy crime capers from the British new wave of cinema.
Jack Hawkins (Ben Hur) plays a former army officer who is bitter at being made to take early retirement. Using his special access to military personnel files, he begins to plot a £1 million bank robbery and sets about gathering an unlikely assortment of accomplices. Spiv Nigel Patrick, con man Roger Livesey, shifty mechanic Richard Attenborough, gigolo Bryan Forbes (who also wrote the BAFTA-nominated screenplay) and blackmail victim Kieron Moore are among the disgruntled ex-servicemen only too happy to get their own back on the system...
Surprisingly frank about sexuality and masculinity for its era, The League of Gentlemen marked a watershed in British cinema, signalling a transition from the restrictive gentility of the 1950s to the swinging 1960s.
