  • Type: Original Photograph
  • Image Size: 9.5 x 7.5 Inches Approx
  • Mount Size: 20 x 16 Inches Approx
  • Signed/Unsigned: Signed & Titled On Reverse

I obtained this some 20 years ago direct from The Photographers' Gallery in London. Just fell in love with the piece though it's time to let it go. Of course, Bravo is one of the great photographers of the 20th Century and this really is a beautiful and poetic piece. Entitled 'Catalina' on the reverse in pencil, it is also signed on the back 'Manual Alvarez Bravo, Mexico' (see scans below).

The image size is 9.5 x 7.5 inches and the mount size is 20 x 16 inches. From research I've done this would have been printed in the late 1970s.

Condition: as per scans below. Mint.

    Biography
    M A N U E L  A L V A R E Z  B R A V O  ( 1 9 0 2  –  2 0 0 2 ,  M E X I C O )

Regarded as one of the great modernists of the twentieth century, the Mexican photographer ManuelÁlvarez Bravo (1902 – 2002) documented the everyday, transforming it into something fantastical. He received his first photographic camera in 1923 and in 1930 started his career working as afreelance documentary photographer for Mexican Folkway, a magazine covering the cultural history ofMexico. He inherited the role from the Italian photographer Tina Modotti. This post, followed by hisassociation revolutionary artists and writers including the social realist artists Diego Rivera, David AlfaroSiqueiros and José Clemente Orozco, influenced and inspired his work.

While often political and referencing the Mexican Revolution, Álvarez Bravos’s work is clearly surrealist.Inanimate objects acquire human qualities and there is a pervading dreamlike quality to hisphotography. Álvarez Bravo created beautiful, sensitive images of everyday Mexico up until his deathin 2002 aged 100.

Manuel Álvarez Bravo is considered a key figure in Mexican and Latin American photography. Hiswork has been published and exhibited internationally.
