        Michael Palin's lust for travel is as strong as it was when he went Around The World In 80 Days, from Pole to Pole and then Full Circle. His latest objective is one of the great challenges in world travel: crossing the Sahara Desert...


        I wonder who made the decision to cut Sahara down to just four one-hour episodes for the TV series? Was it the 'all-knowing' execs at the BBC? I have noticed that for some unknown reason the BBC does its best at times to sabotage their most popular programmes. You know things like cutting stuff down to the minimum or scheduling it at a too early or too late time slot when this series, for example, should be on primetime. I mean doesn't everyone love Michael Palin and his various voyages across the world.

        Is it just me? Am I being unfair on the BBC? As I don't know why this was cut so short I can't be sure I'm talking any sense. And, at the end of the day, it was the BBC who brought us this joy in the first place.

        But whatever the reason for Sahara's truncation, the producers were left with a huge amount of unused footage. Thus the DVD features a large selection of deleted scenes, all linked by Palin. The excellent set of extras also includes a collection of rough video diaries--mainly featuring Palin being pummelled by the elements--and an extensive interview with the presenter. The picture quality is fantastic (particularly compared to Palin's earlier series), as is the digital sound. There is a subtitle option and scene selection and the whole package is thoroughly recommended.
