He knew Catherne the Great, Count Cagliostro, Casanova and the man in the Moon's daughter. He rode on a cannonball and lived on the moon. He was the legendary Baron Munchhausen, and his exploits are celebrated in the most lavish colour film extraaganza made during the Third Reich. Commissioned in 1941 by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels to commemorate the twentieth anniversay of Germany's greatest film studio, Ufa, Munchhausen became the biggest entertainment project of the Third Reich.

Written by Erich Kastner, the author of Emil and the Detectives, the picture stars Hans Albers, the most popular German film actor of his generation. The elaborate eighteenth-century sets are some of the most sumptious ever created for a German film. Its special effects are as impressive by twenty-first century standards as they were in 1943, and it boasts stunning, Agfacolour cinematography. Now restored and digitally remastered, Eureka Video's edition of Munchhausen is as visually sparkling as it was in 1943.

Released in 1943, this film was the product of the German Film Industry under the auspices of the Nazi Party and was intended to rival the most glamorous films being produced by the American Film Industry. It is the story of Baron von Munchhausen who, accompanied by his servant Kuchenreutter, embarks on a series of fantastical journeys across the world and along the way experiencing war, love, imprisonment and escape.

It has the dubious distinction of being Nazi cinema's finest fictional moment.
