Born: 22 May 1970, Streatham, London, England
Height: 5' 9½"
Naomi Campbell was born in Streatham, South London, and grew up in a creatively driven environment shaped largely by her mother’s career as a dancer. She made her first onscreen appearance at the age of seven in the music video for Bob Marley’s “Is This Love,” and later trained at the prestigious Barbara Speake Stage School and the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Her early exposure to performance laid the foundation for a future that would span modeling, acting, music, and television.
Discovered at age 15 while window-shopping in Covent Garden, Naomi Campbell quickly became one of the most in-demand models of the late 1980s and 1990s. She rose to international fame as part of the original group of “supermodels,” alongside Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Claudia Schiffer. Known for her commanding walk and striking presence, she became the first Black model to appear on the covers of Vogue Paris (1988), Time magazine (1991), and the September issue of American Vogue (1989).
Her career has remained remarkably enduring, with continued runway, editorial, and campaign work spanning more than three decades. Campbell is recognized not only as a fashion icon but as a trailblazer who helped break long-standing racial barriers within the industry.
Alongside her fashion career, Campbell explored acting from a young age. She made her feature film debut in 1991 in Cool as Ice, followed by roles in Miami Rhapsody (1995), Girl 6 (1996), and Invasion of Privacy (1996). She also appeared as herself in numerous projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
On television, Campbell made memorable guest appearances on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, New York Undercover, The Cosby Show, and later became known to new audiences through reality and competition series such as The Face and Empire. In recent years, she has continued to expand her media presence with interviews, documentaries, and online content.
In 1995, Campbell ventured into music with her album Babywoman, which found success particularly in Japan. She has also authored two books: Swan, a novel co-written with Caroline Upcher, and Naomi, a photography collection chronicling her modeling career. Beyond entertainment, Campbell has collaborated with major brands, developed charity projects, and launched fashion-related initiatives including her charity-focused runway event “Fashion for Relief.”
Naomi Campbell’s influence extends far beyond the runway. She is widely regarded as one of the most successful and recognizable models in history, a pioneer for diversity in fashion, and a cultural figure whose impact spans decades. Her longevity, global presence, and ongoing advocacy continue to define her as a central figure in contemporary fashion and entertainment.
