- Odilon Redon
(1840-1916)
Painter
Odilon Redon created two entirely different types of picture: colourful, semi-Impressionist vases of flowers, animals or landscapes, and highly imaginative drawings, lithographs and paintings of fantastic subjects such as plants with human heads, phantoms and figments from dreams, visions and nightmares. He maintained stoutly that the fantasy pictures were only possible because of his contact with reality. His work became known in Paris between 1879 and 1882, and he was hailed as one of the principal Symbolist painters, particularly by the literary Symbolists. He was a great friend of Mallarme, and, like him, seems to have experienced a spiritual crisis (c.1894/5). His journal - A Soi-Meme, from 1867 to 1915, was published in 1922.
There are works in Bordeaux, Bristol, London (NG, V&A), New York (Met. Mus., M of MA), Otterlo (Kroller-Muller), Paris (Louvre, Petit Pal.) and many European and US museums.
