Paul Leni's last film in Germany before
continuing on his chilly way to America
is also one of his best, and gives us a
chance to see four of Germany's finest
actors in their earlier days. Wilhelm
Dieterle, who was to become a
renowned Hollywood director, plays a young poet who tells three stories
behind three exhibits in a wax museum:
Haroun-al-Raschid (Emil Jannings), Ivan the Terrible (Conrad Veidt) and Jack the Ripper (Werner Krauss).
The
expressionist lighting and designs are symbolic of character and plot,
creating a haunting atmosphere.
