Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato, worked mainly in Rome as a follower of Domenichino. His most famous work is the Virgin in Prayer, a half-length devotional image known from innumerable versions and copies, e.g. London (NG, Courtauld Inst). His Madonna and Child (London, NG) is based on a Reni. Other works are in Cambridge, Cleveland Ohio, Glasgow, Liverpool and Oxford.
