Shelley Hack
Shelley Hack (born 1947) is an American actress, producer, model, media consultant, and global democracy advocate. World-famous for replacing Kate Jackson on Charlie’s Angels during the 1979–1980 season, Hack has since built a substantial off-screen career in politics, media strategy, and international development.
Hack began modelling professionally at age 16 and quickly became one of the most recognisable faces of the 1970s. She became internationally known as Revlon’s “Charlie” perfume girl, appearing in high-profile television commercials that made her a household name and one of the era’s most successful print and commercial models.
Hack made her film debut with a cameo in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977). Her major breakthrough came in 1979 when she was cast as Tiffany Welles on the hit series Charlie’s Angels, replacing Kate Jackson. Although she appeared for only one season, her version of the “intelligent Angel” remains a memorable part of the show’s history.
Following Charlie’s Angels, she worked steadily throughout the 1980s. Highlights include:
Her final credited acting role was in the television movie Frequent Flyer (1996).
From the 1990s onward, Hack transitioned into producing, media consultancy, and international democracy initiatives. She has worked extensively in post-conflict nations, advising on women’s political participation, media development, election processes, and civic engagement.
Hack is a senior strategist and programme director for numerous global organisations, and her work has taken her to Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. She is widely respected as an expert in democratic governance, women’s leadership, and media freedom.
She is also co-founder of the Shirley & Shelley Hack Foundation (formerly associated with initiatives supporting the Haiti earthquake recovery), and she continues to be active in non-profit, humanitarian, and educational work.
Shelley Hack is married to film and television director Harry Winer. The couple collaborate professionally on media and social-impact projects and have one daughter. As of 2025, Hack continues to live between the United States and Europe while working on international democracy programmes.
Although long retired from acting, Shelley Hack remains active in global development, political leadership training, women’s empowerment programmes, and media consultancy. She continues to appear at select retrospectives, interviews, and charity events, and she remains a highly respected figure for both her entertainment legacy and her international advocacy work.
