In February/March 1989 Ohtake was in Austerlitz, New York, Pittsburgh, Memphis, New Orleans, and Albuquerque in New Mexico, accumulating sketches and a collage scapbook bulging with found images and experiments with new techniques and materials. He was then provided by the Fund for Artists Colonies with his studio at Austerlitz, about two hours from New York by train, where he worked in the company of a small group of other painters, composers and writers. Without making direct reference to his sketches or collages, Ohtake sifted through his American experiences by abandoning himself to chance and memory, producing nearly 100 gouaches on paper or canvas painted directly on the floor as the most practical solution for the large scale that he wished to employ. The two cities that most impressed Ohtake in the US were Memphis and New Orleans, in particular the time-stained walls he found in both cities. He replicated similar stains in his pictures...prev.
