Same artwork was used for all format releases, CD, vinyl and cassette. The artist, James Marsh, used the figures from the famous John Everett Millais's painting, The Boyhood of Raleigh, (1870) (Tate). The Pre-Raphaelite's most famous painting is Ophelia, circa 1851. Millais's sons Everett and George modelled for the boys. The sailor was a professional model. The location was Budleigh Salterton. For me, this adds a haunting, knowing but unknowing, quality to Marsh's work for I was sure I'd seen the figures before but forgot where I seen them. So seeing them taken out of context from what is a rather traditional painting (the original one) into this surreal landscape is a bit like Magritte and the bowler hat - surreal reality. Millais painting: James Marsh was born in 1946. The seminal work for Talk Talk is a highpoint but he has produced covers for, among others, Jamiroquai, Steeleye Span, Gerry Rafferty, Kirsty MacColl & Erasure plus work for numerous companies such as British Airways and The Royal Mail. The list of companies though is almost endless. Marsh's astonishing artwork can be found & bought in ltd edn signed prints & other stuff here. The highest recommendation. If people remember the band today I would venture that for most it's some of the songs from here that they have in their mind's eye with , of course, the sublime It's My Life crowding out most other songs. With bands like Talk Talk and Japan there comes a point, one point, where artistic and commercial needs converge as one. With Japan it was Tin Drum; with Talk Talk it is this. The problem with the band's legacy is that no-one seems to want to promote it these days - at least none of the primary members. Hollis retired after his solo album in the late 1990s and there was really nothing from him to recall those earlier days with Talk Talk. The other 2 band members don't seem to want to engage - ditto the tribute show last year. And Tim Friese-Greene? Try interviewing him about it. Good luck with that. Four singles were taken from the album in the UK if you count the rerelease of It's My Life in 1985. It's My Life, Such a Shame and "Dum Dum Girl came out the previous year. If historic UK charts are worth anything (and for me they aren't) it reached number 35 in the UK charts. Yeah, right. So there were 34 better albums in that particular week? Absolute nonsence; it's one of the most important albums ever. Mainland Europe it fared much better, within the top 5 in Holland, Germany and Switzerland. Buy: vinyl January 2020: 1 in stock.
