Overview

Uma Thurman is an American actress whose career has included work in independent film, major studio productions, and television. Known for varied dramatic and action roles, she has maintained a steady screen presence since the late 1980s.

Early Life

Thurman was raised in a Buddhist household. Her mother, Nena von Schlebrügge, a former model of Swedish and German heritage, was previously married to Timothy Leary before marrying Thurman’s father, Robert Thurman, a scholar of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies. Thurman’s first name derives from a Hindu goddess, and she grew up with three brothers: Ganden, Dechen, and Mipam.

Education

She attended Northfield Mount Hermon School but left at age 15 to pursue acting in New York City.

Career

Thurman began acting professionally as a teenager, appearing in films such as Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and Henry & June (1990). Her career gained international recognition with her role as Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994), which earned her an Academy Award nomination. She later collaborated with Tarantino again in the Kill Bill films (2003–2004), taking on one of her most widely known roles.

Her work has continued across film and television, including projects such as Gattaca (1997), The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996), Nymphomaniac (2013), Imposters (2017–2018), and stage work on Broadway.

Professional Affiliations and Modelling

Thurman’s public profile has also included modelling. She was a spokesmodel for Lancôme for several years, and later for Louis Vuitton in the mid-2000s.

Personal Life

Thurman married actor Gary Oldman in 1990, divorcing in 1992. She later married actor Ethan Hawke in 1998 after meeting during the filming of Gattaca. They had two children—Maya Ray (b. 1998) and Levon Roan (b. 2002)—before separating in 2003 and finalising their divorce in 2004.

Thurman has since lived primarily in New York and continues to work in film, television, and stage productions.
