- WILSON STEER
(1860-1942)
He was the son of a portrait painter. He studied in Paris, 1882-3, and in the late 1880s discovered Edgar Degas and the Impressionists, particularly Monet. From then on his work reflects these influences, which are very strong in his landscapes, these being Constable revivified by Impressionist technique, although he made occasional excursions into Gainsborough.
There are works in Aberdeen, Birkenhead, Bradford, Cambridge (Fitzwm), Cardiff, Edinburg, Leeds, Liverpool, London (Tate, V&A, Courtauld Inst.), Manchester (City, Whitworth), Ottawa, Oxford and Southampton.
