Released in 2002, Camphor isn’t a standard “best of” — it pulls together the quieter, instrumental side of David Sylvian’s work from the later part of his catalogue. This single-disc edition (offered here) was issued alongside a more elaborate two-disc version (see here), the latter expanding the selection and presented in a deluxe Russell Mills-designed digipak.
What makes Camphor interesting is how the material has been reshaped. Several pieces appear in altered form rather than straight album versions. “Wave” is stripped back to its instrumental core, losing the vocal entirely, while “Upon This Earth” is edited down, removing its opening passage. The result is a more continuous, almost ambient flow rather than a conventional track-by-track compilation.
It also includes more unusual material, notably “The Song Which Gives the Key to Perfection”, where Sylvian sets a Sanskrit text to music. Moments like this give the album a different character from his vocal-led releases — less about songs, more about atmosphere and texture.
