DESCRIPTION
The Scattering of Dust exhibition catalogue, featuring Julian Grater's work, was published in 1994 by Pratt Contemporary Art. The exhibition itself, initially displayed at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton, showcased Grater's unique approach to abstract painting. Following its opening, the exhibition toured to various UK galleries, including those in Wolverhampton, Preston, and Truro. The catalogue, which spans 32 pages, includes an essay by the critic and art historian John Russell Taylor, providing insight into Grater’s artistic vision and thematic exploration in this series of works.
Julian Grater, a British artist born in 1959, is recognized for his captivating work inspired by the Arctic. After completing a master's degree at Chelsea School of Art in 1984, Grater participated in several international art residencies, particularly in Canada and Alaska, supported by organizations such as Arts Council England and the Banff Centre for the Arts. His connection to Arctic landscapes became central to his work, especially after residencies in the early 2000s at the Banff Centre and the University of Alaska.
Grater's Arctic Mirage series, which has been exhibited at venues like Southampton City Art Gallery, combines painting, photography, and drawing to explore the dramatic transformations within the Arctic landscape and Inuit culture. One unique technique in this series uses glacial ice from Western Greenland to partially dissolve his drawings, symbolizing environmental fragility. Additionally, his Biomarkers series incorporates elements from the Burgess Shale fossil site, reflecting a deep interest in natural history and the visual depiction of geological time.
Grater's work aims to highlight the urgency of environmental issues while offering a visual and conceptual journey into the Arctic's distinct and evolving environment. His exhibitions and artist talks at venues like Reading Museum often delve into the challenges of translating these landscapes into art, revealing his respect for both the natural world and indigenous communities in the Arctic.
For more on Grater's recent exhibitions, you can check the Southampton City Art Gallery and Reading Museum websites.
Julian Grater & Peter Gabriel:
Julian Grater's connection with Peter Gabriel originates from Grater's artwork being selected as the cover for Gabriel's 1989 album Passion, the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ (one of the greatest album covers ever). Gabriel was drawn to one of Grater's haunting self-image studies, part of a larger series, for its deeply psychological and intense qualities, which resonated with the album's complex, multicultural soundscape. The piece chosen for the cover used mixed media including charcoal, graphite and dry pigments, reflecting themes of introspection and raw human experience, which Gabriel felt aligned well with the music's tone and depth. The album cover went on to receive acclaim, being celebrated as one of the standout album covers of the year in 1989. View
