David Sylvian, Riuichi Sakamoto
This French repress (crediting the movie 'Furyo', European title of 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence') has the same matrix (with A¹ and B¹ scratched out and replaced by B and A¹) and the same catalogue # as Forbidden Colours 105.513/105513 which was initially released with the vocal track as the A side and came in a different sleeve.
105.513 appears on the label.
Directed by Japanese auteur Nagisa Oshima (In the Realm of the Senses) and produced by Jeremy Thomas (The Dreamers, The Last Emperor), Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence was originally released in 1983 and remains a riveting exploration of racism, brutality and the sparks that fly when cultures collide.
The thing that sticks in my mind from the movie is the ethereal music of Sakamoto. Beyond the acting, the cinematography, the direction ... beyond it all, it's the music that holds it all together like glue. When later Sakamoto asked his friend David Sylvian to provide lyrics and vocals to a single he gave us one of the most evocative and moving pieces of music of the 1980s.
Looking back nearly 40 years it is the music that has aged best. That's taking nothing away from the film: it is good and it is watchable. But the music sounds as haunting today as the day it was made.
