The genius of Alec Guinness is here in all its early glory
A precocious child, Denry Machin (Alec Guinness - Bridge on the River Kwai, Star Wars) decides as a boy to master his own Fate as much as possible. With equal parts cheek, charm and ambition, over the course of his life he finds many ways to enhance the quality of his life - a challenge he relishes, surmounting social and other barriers with shrewdness, luck and the invaluable gift of making himself liked by everyone from the landed gentry to the lowliest washerwoman. With a large bank account and an amiably affectionate personality he soon became known as The Card, capping his achievements by becoming the youngest-ever Mayor of his hometown. But has Denry met his match when it comes to women?
There are two in his life - Ruth Earp (Glynis Johns - Mary Poppins, The Sundowners), an attractive and vivacious dancing teacher and quiet, placid little Nellie Cotterill (Petula Clark - Vice Versa, I Know Where I'm Going). Which one will he choose?
Nominated for an Oscar, this comedy made in 1952 features charming performances from Alec Guinness as Denry Machin with Glynis Johns and Petula Clark as the two women he loves. Directed by the Oscar-nominated Ronald Neame (The Million Pound Note, Scrooge), THE CARD will continue to amuse for generations to come.

- 1984 TV play EDWIN. Written by John Mortimer and directed by Rodney Bennett, Alec Guinness is Sir Fennimore Truscott, a retired High Court Judge, suspects his neighbour, Thomas Marjoriebanks (Paul Rogers) of having seduced his wife (Renee Asherson) many years earlier. Bolstered by boredom and bottled-up suspicions he has harboured for a great deal of time, Truscott carefully develops a case against the alleged adulterer and seeks answers to the terrible questions that have haunted him for so long. His wife's presumed indiscretions are only the tip of the iceberg as Truscott begins to question the paternity of Edwin, the man he raised as his son. When a grown Edwin returns home, Truscott's obsession comes to the fore.
