Biography (1816 - 1863)
Header Photo: Past and Present No. 1 (Detail) by Augustus Leopold Egg
The painting was first exhibited in 1858 with no title, but it did have the inscription: 'August the 4th - Have just heard that B - has been dead more than a fortnight, so his poor children have now lost both parents. I hear she was last seen on Friday last near the Strand, evidently with no place to lay her head. What a fall hers has been!'

Augustus Egg ~ Biography (1816 - 1863)
Painter
It's really hard to find interesting, concrete info on the life of Augustus Leopold Egg. Try and find any kind of biography book on him and you'll be disappointed. Victorian Painting is the best book which features his work purely because it is one of the most beautiful designed books I have ever seen.
I'll add more details on this beatifully disquitening Victorian in time but for now here are a couple of facts:
Past and Present No. 2 was set in a moonlit garret five years after the first.
Egg was a great friend of Charles Dickens - indeed, he acted with him in the amateur theatrical performances which so obsessed Dickens durung the 1850s and 1860s.
In 1847, was one of the artists to accept a commission of Shakesperian subjects to decorate the dining room of none other than Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
He was a mwmber of 'The Clique', an informal group of artists who came together in the year of Queen Victoria's accession.
Was friends with William Powell Frith. Attended the Derby with him in 1856.
He utilized the serial device in the form of a triptych to tell a story over several years.
