Croydon
A few pictures of Reeves Corner after the riots in August 2011 are here.
Random photos of Croydon, South London from Roman Way to West Croydon Bus Station. Croydon was badly bombed during the 2nd World War and new skyscrapers have popped up with seemingly no thought on how they would look collectively. The result is an absolute mess of a place from an architectural point of view. Ah but do the architects care? They just scarper when they've done their worst and leave the people living there to put up with the misery. The skyscapers aren't even great skyscrapers! Many must have seem dated as soon as they were put up! We're left as though we're living in an episode of Life on Mars meets Groundhog Day.
Still the ugly buildings keep on coming with the recent addition of the Centrale shopping centre to the high street. I can't help thinking the aim is to make the High Street look the same as every other high street in the land so people who get lost feel at home.
There are examples of Croydon's pre-war beauty if you look hard enough which even Croydon Council won't dare replace with an office block. But give them time and I've no doubt their cement them over in their quest to create a seamless grey metropolis.
