A TRAGEDIE
In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare’s plays for television.
The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical
and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.
“All of her that is out of door most rich!
If she be furnish’d with a mind so rare,
She is alone the Arabian bird, and I
Have lost the wager. Boldness be my friend!
Arm me, audacity, from head to foot!”
Cymbeline, the King of Britain, is angry that his daughter Imogen
has chosen the low-born Posthumus as her husband. As
the Queen tries to force Imogen to marry her own son, Posthumus flees to Rome. There
his new friend Iachimo sets out to prove – by fair means or foul – that the pure
Imogen will betray
him . . .
One of Shakespeare’s final plays, Cymbeline has been celebrated for its characterisation,
particularly that of Imogen and Iachimo (played here by Helen
Mirren and Robert Lindsay). The New York Times
welcomed this fine production, commenting that director Elijah Moshinsky had carried out “an outstanding job”.

William Shakespeare
Hys Most Excellent
The Tragical Comedie of
Cymbeline
King of Britain
ABOUT CYMBELINE
The first reference to Cymbeline
is a note by the astrologer Simon Forman that he saw the play
performed on 8th September 1611, (He refers to the heroine as Innogen, and this name appears
in all the sources – the corrupted form Imogen, is found only in the Folio
and appears to be a misprint!) . . . Shakespeare’s plot reflects a wide range of reading.
He took his title and setting from the name and reign of the legendary British king
Cymbeline, or Cunobelinus, who is supposed to have reigned from 33 B.C.
till shortly after the birth of Christ. Much of the detail and
character names are derived from Holinshed’s Chronicles of Early British History as well as other sources and also drawing
partially on an old play, The Rare Triumphs of love and Fortune – acted circa 1582 and printed circa 1589.
