Edwin Austin Abbey ~ Biography Notes
Painter (1852 - 1911)
Edwin Austin Abbey was a U.S. watercolourist, oil-painter and book illustrator. He spent alot of time living and working in Britain, and became an RA in 1898. His illustration work in pen includes works for Oliver Goldsmith, Robert Herrick and Shakespeare. He also painted the scenes of The Quest of the Holy Grail on the walls of the public library in Boston, Mass.

American artist who liked Sargent and Whistler, worked in England. He was one of the artists that took part in the Royal Exchange sceme in the 1890s.
He specialized in historical and Shakespearian scenes.
For the boston public Library he turned to the theme of The Quest for the Holy Grail, the old Arthurian dream. The Library features The Castle of the Grail and Castle of the maidens.
Worked on the Boston Library for much of the 1890s.
Became technical supervisor of several new murals for the Peers' Corridor in the Houses of Parliament in 1907.
