John Parry ~ Biography
The British artist John Orlando Parry was also an actor, pianist, comedian and singer
My fascination with him is the header painting and just how beautiful the watercolour is. The bright colours, the gaudy advertising are evocative of a lost London long, long ago.
The picture has to be looked at in context. It was the days before pictorial posters when only typographical advertisements could inform the public of such events as the departure times of boats or stage coaches, and theatrical performances. This picture captures the times perfectly. A bill-poster is in action in the 1830s putting up posters for such attractions as flea markets as a flea show and an advertisement for shaving cream. The only pictorial images are crude woodcuts.
He died at the age of 69, and was buried in East Molesey cemetery

Just that magical work. I for one would love to see the original as all the reproductions I've seen of it have completely different colours. Some are bright and others darker and it completely changes one's perception of the picture.
