Kate Jackson – Actress (F)
Born: October 29, 1948, Birmingham, Alabama, USA
In addition to being the first Angel to be cast in Charlie's Angels (1976), she was also responsible for coming up with the show's title.
Kate Jackson was born Catherine Elise Jackson and spent her early adulthood in summer stock theatre, studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and working as a page and tour guide at NBC studios in Rockefeller Center.
Although eager for speaking roles, she made her early television mark in the mid-1960s daytime serial Dark Shadows—ironically as a glamorous, non-speaking ghost. Her first substantial TV role followed as Jill Danko on The Rookies (1973–1976).
Full stardom arrived when Jackson was cast as Sabrina Duncan, “the smart one,” on Charlie's Angels. She remained with the show from 1976 to 1979 and helped shape much of its early creative direction. Her cool, witty and grounded portrayal made her one of the most popular television figures of the 1970s.
Her last regular weekly television series was Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983–1987), where she played an ordinary housewife drawn into the world of espionage. The series became a major success and remains one of her signature roles.
Jackson received wide industry support when she battled breast cancer in the early 1990s. Her openness about her diagnosis and treatment helped raise public awareness at a time when such discussions were far less common. She later became active in promoting early detection and women's health issues.
Though her film appearances have always been selective, Kate Jackson continued to work in television into the 1990s and 2000s, including guest roles, TV movies and documentary appearances. Across the last two decades she has largely stepped back from acting, preferring a quieter life while remaining involved in occasional industry events and retrospectives celebrating Charlie's Angels and Scarecrow and Mrs. King.
She has also been a frequent and popular commercial spokesperson, and has taken on behind-the-scenes roles as a producer on several projects. In public she has remained warmly regarded by fans, often praised for her humor, intelligence and trailblazing television career.
Kate Jackson has been married and divorced three times. Her first husband was actor Andrew Stevens, son of Stella Stevens. Later in life she adopted a son, embracing motherhood with the same determination that marked her professional work.
Today, Kate Jackson is remembered as one of television’s most influential actresses: a pioneer of the smart, modern female lead and a central figure in two of the most recognisable TV hits of their time. Her work, perseverance and impact on popular culture continue to be celebrated.
