The notoriety that Cubism induced was at its height in 1912. Didn't seem to put fellow artists off as Picasso and Braque were joined by the young Spanish painter Juan Gris, and the poet Guillaume Apollinaire whilst other writers were emerging as propagandists for what was now a full-scale artistic movement.
Both Picasso and Braque did take Cubism to a point where everything was completely dismantled but 1912, when this painting was created, wasn't that point. Rather they contented themselves with re-introducing elements from the real world, inserting them in to accentuate their own vision. Thus Braque inserted words into his canvases whilst here, in Still Life with Chair Caning Picasso inseted as a 'frame' a piece of rope. Cafe life was never far away from this era of paintings - glass, lemon & newspaper. The caning of the chair back is actually printed on to a piece of oil cloth that Picasso stuck on to the canvas. Thus the collage was born.
Shadows form
across the oil cloth, making the confusion
between the 'real' and the
'unreal' all the more palpable...A more detailed description & text in the book: Life and Works of Picasso
