Still life always played a critical role in Cubism. It's definition says it all: 'an arrangement of objects completely under the artist's control'. Unlike Braque he sometimes applied the Cubist fragmentation of reality to portraiture. By 1917 he was using a realistic style in paintings such as Portrait of Olga in an Armchair, and simultaneously producing Cubist works. Here, as a case in point of never trying to tie Picasso down to one 'ism', he painted a still life in a traditional rather than Cubist way. He was master of everything he touched.
It's still unsettling even if it is relatovely conventional as he has deliberately left unfinished patches and cross-hatchings. The wall-mouldings hint of classicism or a reflection of the comfortable life-style that Picasso had adopted after his marriage to Olga...A more detailed description & text in the book: Life and Works of Picasso
