When Picasso painted large pictures it invariably meant a change of direction. Three Dancers is large.
Classical restraint has gone out of the window. In its place is a rage and anguish spilling out onto the canvas. It's as if Picasso has lifted his head and empied it of Lovers and figures playing The Pipes of Pan and found only a suppressed rage.
There are similarities with The Lovers but they are only tenous. Three Dancers is theatrical but 'love' has flown the nest as now the bodies are violently distorted. The harsh colours and angularities suggest some grotesque ritual is being enacted. The central dancer looks like a crucified figure. The whole picture is sheer and utter anger.
How long had this rage been there? What was at its core? Bitter conflicts had developed between Picasso and Olga to explain it or partially explain it. But whatever was at its core, these violent and expressive distortions continued into the late 1920s. I think it is this period that has led many critics to interpret this as a period of misogyny but I don't subscribe to that. I don't think there is anyone alive suitably qualified to say for certain the motives behind the genius that was Picasso...A more detailed description & text in the book: Life and Works of Picasso
