Susannah York

15th January 2011
British actress Susannah York has died at the age of 72 after suffering from cancer, her son has said.
Her son Orlando Wells told the Telegraph newspaper:
'She was an absolutely fantastic mother, who was very down to earth.
'She loved nothing more than cooking a good Sunday roast and sitting around a fire of a winter's evening. In some sense, she was quite a home girl. Both my sister Sasha and I feel incredibly lucky to have her as a mother.
'She was a woman with grace and stature. She had advanced bone marrow cancer which she had an operation for.
'But, last Thursday, she had a scan and then the descent was fast. In the end, her death was painless and quick.'
She had lived by Clapham Common, South London for many years.

b. Susannah Yolande Fletcher
Despite an inescapable British quota of misconceived and under realized films, Susannah York is an English rose from a wilder garden than nurtured Madeleine Carroll or Virginia McKenna.
There have always been hints of character and independence, as well as unusual literary ambition that few films have captured.
She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she won the Arthene Seyler and Ronson Awards. Several theatrical appearances and TV plays later, York was cast in her first film, 1960's Tunes of Glory. Her best early film roles included Sophie Western in Tom Jones (1963) and a profoundly disturbed patient in John Huston's Freud (1962). She created a mild tabloid sensation in 1968 when she gamely participated in scenes involving masturbation and lesbian lovemaking in The Killing of Sister George. Her performance as a bleach-blonde 1930s loser in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? won her the BFA award and an Oscar nomination; she would go on to collect a Cannes award for her work in Robert Altman's Images (1972).
The biggest box-office successes which she has been most recently associated with were the first two Superman films, in which she was cast as the Man of Steel's Kryptonian mother.
Adding writing to her long list of accomplishments, Susannah York co-authored the script for her 1980 film Falling in Love Again, and has published several popular children's books.
In 2004 she performed the Women of Shakespeare in an Off-Broadway production in New York City.
Currently (2005), she is appearing at the Croydon Warehouse, a fringe venue, in a new mystery thriller, The Kindness of Strangers, by Sara Mason.
- The Kindness of Strangers is at the Warehouse Theatre, Croydon (020 8680 4060) from 29 April to 22 May, 2005. For more info go to http://www.warehousetheatre.co.uk
