Die PROLETARISCHE TRILOGIE gehört zu den „Underdog-Filmen” Aki Kaurismäkis. Alle drei Filme SCHATTEN IM PARADIES (1986), ARIEL (1988) und DAS MÄDCHEN AUS DER STREICHHOLZFABRIK (1989) entstehen in den 80er Jahren und erzählen von Industrialisierung, Hoffnungs- und Arbeitslosigkeit.

Sie gehören zu den sensibelsten Beschreibungen der Arbeiterklasse und proletarischer Identität, die das europäische Kino aufzuwarten hat. Fernab vom „neuen” modernen Finnland, das von „Bau-Spekulanten” (Kaurismäki) geprägt wird, zeigt der Regisseur ein schäbiges, manchmal hässliches Bild des Landes, das er in den Vororten der Großstadt findet. Denn dort gibt es (oder nur dort?) noch wahre Menschlichkeit, gepaart mit dem beißenden Humor, der allen Kaurismäki Filmen eigen ist. Nie sind seine Protagonisten nur Opfer.

Zwischen 1983 und 1989 dreht Aki Kaurismäki sieben Filme, die alle (bis auf LENINGRAD COWBOYS GO AMERICA) in Helsinki spielen. Fast alle handeln von Versuchen der Stadt zu entfliehen, per Auto, Schiff oder Ruderboot. Manche scheitern, andere enden im Gefängnis.

Zu Kaurismäkis Verfilmungen literarischer Klassiker gehören der von Dostojewski-Motiven inspirierte Film CRIME AND PUNISHMENT (1983), gefolgt von der sehr freien Shakespeare-Adaption HAMLET GOES BUSINESS (1987), einer schon fast prophetischen filmischen Annäherung an das Finnland der achtziger Jahre, das schon bald fest in den Händen von finanzstarken Spekulanten liegen sollte.

Neben der grotesken Komödie CALAMARI UNION (1985) dreht Kaurismäki in den achtziger Jahren die so genannte PROLETARISCHE TRILOGIE (Collection 1). Und fast beiläufig entsteht der als „Fingerübung” gedachte erste Film mit den LENINGRAD COWBOYS (Collection 2), mit dem der eigenwillige Finne besonders in Deutschland Kultstatus erlangt.

Das Ende der achtziger Jahre bedeutet einen Wendepunkt in Kaurismäkis Bio- und Filmografie: Nach Abschluss der Dreharbeiten von DAS MÄDCHEN AUS DER STREICHHOLZFABRIK (1989) verläßt Finnlands bedeutendster Regisseur, Filmkritiker und Drehbuchautor Helsinki, vermutlich in einem Cadillac, um mit seiner Frau Paula und seinen Hunden in Portugal zu leben. Die folgende Vorbereitung zu I HIRED A CONTRACT KILLER, der in London entsteht, markiert die in den neunziger Jahren beginnende Phase von Auslandsproduktionen.

Mit DAS LEBEN DER BOHÈME (1992), einem „Requiem auf die größte Zeit des europäischen Kinos” (Die Zeit), setzt Aki Kaurismäki nach I HIRED A CONTRACT KILLER seine internationalen Produktionen fort. Die finnische Version von Murgers „La vie de Bohème” ist eine poetische Vision Frankreichs, allerdings ohne, dass die französische Wirklichkeit Eingang in den Film gefunden hätte.

Der in Hamburg gedrehte LENINGRAD COWBOYS MEET MOSES (1993) ist Kaurismäkis letzter Film im Ausland. Zwar lebt er weiterhin in Portugal, beginnt aber mit TATJANA (1994), einer „sehr persönlichen Erinnerung in Schwarz-Weiß”, fortan konsequent nur noch in seiner finnischen Heimat zu drehen: „Ich bin zu der Überzeugung gekommen, dass man Filme in seinem eigenen Land drehen sollte.” (Kaurismäki)

Mit WOLKEN ZIEHEN VORÜBER (1996) entsteht wieder ein lakonisch-rauher Gegenwartsfilm, ein Film über liebenswerte, gescheiterte Helden, Arbeitslosigkeit und schwach keimende Hoffnung. Die neunziger Jahre beendet Kaurismäki schließlich mit einem radikalen Film, seiner Rückkehr zu den Wurzeln des Kinos: Stumm und in Schwarz-Weiß gedreht zeigt JUHA (1998) die Zerstörung des Glücks eines einfachen Liebespaares vom Land.

Nach der PROLETARISCHEN TRILOGIE ist WOLKEN ZIEHEN VORÜBER der Beginn einer neuen Reihe, der TRILOGIE DER VERLIERER, die Kaurismäki im neuen Jahrtausend mit MANN OHNE VERGANGENHEIT (2002) und LICHTER DER VORSTADT (2006) abschließt.
