Random photos of Crystal Palace, Upper Norwood, South London, and including Gipsy Hill.

Among the most famous former residents of the area was the French writer Emile Zola, who lived at Upper Norwood's Queens Hotel in exile from France between 1898-99. Famously, he photographed the area.

Another famous resident was the actress Margaret Lockwood (the most popular British actress of the 1940s), who lived in the Gipsy Hill area from the age of 4 in 1920 to around 1937. Her mother took Lockwood and her brother from India to live there because of the clean air it's high altitude would bring! The area is one of the highest locations in London at 357 ft and the views from Westow Hill of Dulwich College and beyond to the city of London are stunning.

Both areas have been photographed below.

Just walk around the area and so many of the houses stand as testimony to the area's Victorian heyday. Exquisite splendours high on the golden hill. The coming of the Crystal Palace in 1854 was of course responsible for the affluence of the area and mercifully ugly new buildings have been kept to a minimum.
