CAST:
(M-G-M)
No one seriously expected a second Mrs
Miniver when The Miniver Story was in the
making. It is difficult to capture the magical
quality of the original, and this trades on its
predecessor's name and the drawing power of
Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon.
Opening with a strangely pallid reproduction of London on VE day, Mrs Miniver finds
herself caught in the exuberant melee following the news that the war is over. She has just
come from a doctor, realizes she has not long
to live and bravely determines to keep the
news from her family.
There are positives and the chief laurels go to Greer Garson who, even
with the unmistakable signs of illness and
mental stress, makes feasible the husband's
claim that she looks as lovely as ever.
John Hodiak gives a fine clear-cut performance.
The negatives are that this is, plain and simple, an appalling movie. The spirit of the original movie is missing; in fact the spirit of this film is nowhere. Made to cash in on the original, this film is filming by numbers. You have been warned.
