Hangover Square is eerie murder melodrama of the London gaslight era - typical of Patrick Hamilton yarns, of which this is another. And it doesn't make any pretence at mystery. The madman-murderer is known from the first reel.
It is the story of a distinguished young composer-pianist with a Jekyll-Hyde personality. When he becomes over-wrought, he's a madman - and his lustful forages are always accompanied by a loss of memory for the periods during which he is murder-bent (very handy for the sustainment of the plot!).
Laird Cregar as the madman-murderer shows markedly the physical decline, through dieting, said to have been a factor in the (actor's) death. Linda Darnell and George Sanders are co-stars, the former as the two-timing girl and Sanders as a Scotland Yard psychiatrist who provides the tell-tale clues responsible for the denouement.
Production is grade A, and so is the direction by John Brahm, with particular bows to the music score by Bernard Herrmann.
