Interiors of 7000 Romaine St (May 2008)
The story of my access into the former Hughes's fortress that was his headquarters in Romaine Street, Los Angeles is thus: I had gone to Los Angeles specifically to see the exterior of this Art Nouveau building. Like all those fascinated by the biggest enigma of the 20th-century, I knew how important Romaine Street was in the story of his life and wanted to briefly share the same space as the great man. Where I stood he once stood, where I walked he once ambled.
So there I was, taking photos when I saw a security man for the building. I told him why I was there and how I had come from the UK for this moment. Without a word, he gestured me to follow him, opened a door and let me in. And then he disappeared. I never saw the man again but am forever thankful.
Here are the photos of the trip. It's as though nothing has changed in the 50 years or so, that the ghost of Howard Hughes still remains, a ghost in the shell.
The current owners of the property have asked me to clarify that I was fortunate and such trips are not encouraged as it is, after all, a private business. So save yourself the air fare and just look at these pics.
