- Can't resist it, but this is the movie that John Mills swigs the most famous glass of beer in movie history - probaly! Can't say he hadn't earned it, mind you!
Based on a slight, real-life anecdote, the movie is the story of a handful of people who drive an ambulance through the mine-ridden, enemy-occupied desert after the collapse of Tobruk in 1942. There are a nerve-stained officer who has taken to the bottle, his tough, reliable sergeant-major, a couple of nurses and a South African officer. Director J. Lee Thompson captures the start, pitless atmosphere of the desert superbly. The screenplay skilfully blends excitement, a hint of romance and a fearful sense of danger. Mills is the skipper, strained to the limit, who seeks solace in a few swift swigs. This is a believable, edgy performance. Anthony Quayle, as the South African, has a dodgy accent but brings a plausible charm to his role. Harry Andrews, as always, is first rate, this time as the sergeant-major. Stripped of any glamour, Sylvia Syms fits like a glove into her part though she might irritate some. Poor Diane Clare, a newcomer, plays a frightened nurse who gets bumped off half way through the film.
- Ice Cold in Alex refers to the beer that an army ambulance Captain has promised himself as a reward when he, two nurses, a mechanic and a mysterious South African officer complete their arduous and perilous trek across the deserts of North Africa to Alexandria.
