Jürgen Prochnow was born June 10 1941 in Berlin, and grew up in Duesseldorf. After finishing school he worked in a bank. At the same time he started on his acting career (he undertook a bank career to appease his parents).

From 1971-1976 he belonged to the ensemble of the theater (Schauspielhaus) in Bochum and also started to be in TV productions and a few films. Several of these productions had Wolfgang Petersen as director. One of Prochnow's most memorable efforts was in the TV film Die Konsequenz (The Consequence), a lovestory between two homosexuals. Some people were scandalized, and the Bavarian TV station refused to broadcast the film, but the general public liked it very much. And in 1981, of course, there was Das Boot. It's interesting to note that in the more recent Der Shrei Der Liebe, (The Cry of Love), he again plays a homosexual. Only this time, twenty years later, nobody seemed to be scandalized.

His acting career since the early has had a few highs such as Dune (1984) and The English Patient but they are scattered among many god-damn awful movies. US made for TV movies, german movies shot on the quick and cheap with the only requirements from Prochnow being to look serious and sincere...his latter movies are a real disappontment. And it can also be added that given the awful scripts Prochnow's performances are still disappointing and lazy. The brilliant promise of Das Boot has given way to the sloppiness of middle age.

Jürgen Prochnow

By 2003 he had sunk to such a level as to make perhaps the worst movie of all time, Baltic Storm, purporting to be about the sinking of the passenger ferry, Estonia, in 1994, but really just a tacky low-grade thriller with the Estonia tragedy tacked on to the storyline. To take the disaster and make a film so bad just to make money is so disrespectful to the relatives of the dead that it is a disgrace. Yes, the director, producer and screenwriters have a share of the blame but Prochnow and his co-stars, Greta Scacchi and Donald Sutherland must have read the script and realised this movie was nothing more than a money making exercise which danced on the graves of the dead in return for the colour of money. They should be ashamed of themselves and donate their fees to the relatives of the dead.

Prochnow was married during in the 70's, and lost a young daughter, Johanna, in 1987. In 1982 he married Isabel Goslar with whom he has a son (Roman - b. 1983) and a daughter (Mona - b. 1985). Prochnow and Isabel were amicably divorced early in 1997, and he is currently involved with German screen writer/actress Birgit Stein. He presently resides in LA and Munich.
