Lord Halifax (1881 - 1959) ~ Trivia

Random trivia I've picked up on Lord Halifax. I will add to the page when time permits and I have any kind of encouragement. You know, even a 'share' gives one encouragement. I don't need much!

  • If you have any trivia or photos you would like to share please e-mail me here (ihuppert5@aol.com) and I will add it. It would be great to build this up into something substantial on the great man that as many people as possible could share. A fact a day keeps the doubters away. I just made that up! Or maybe I heard it someplace else and am recycling it. Can't remember.

  • Consider this: if Lord Halifax had become prime minster after Chamberlain instead of Churchill what would Britain be like today? What would it have meant? Would Halifax's appeasement really have worked? I mean, even a cursory glance of the history of the 2nd World War would suggest that Hitler and appeasement were a one way street. Hitler gets everything and you get to keep your name tag. If your lucky.

  • In November 1929, Baldwin said: "...that if the time comes when the party which I lead ceases to attract to itself men of the calibre of Edward Wood [Irwin later Halifax the Viceroy], then I have finished with my party.' (Hansard, 5th Series, vol. 231, col. 1306)

  • Labour were neutral when both Halifax and Churchill vied to take over from Chamberlain in May 1940.

  • Garrowby was the lesser of his two Yorkshire houses. It looked out over the Vale of York.

  • Out of Halifax, Chamberlain and Churchill it was the latter who felt closer to Europe.

  • Born at Powderham Castle, 4th child.

  • Met Herman Goering in Germany in 1937.

  • Became Ambassador to the US in 1940 following the death in Washington of Lord Lothian. Went from King's Cross Station on route to Scapa Flow for a grand battleship crossing of the Atlantic.

  • A fox-hunting Anglo-Catholic aristocrat, nicknamed 'The Holy Fox' by Churchill for his political guile, Halifax was one of the most prominent Tory politicians of the interwar period. As Viceroy of India, he struck a deal with Gandhi that ended the Civil Disobedience campaign. His meeting with Hitler in 1937 was a milestone in appeasement, yet just days before the infamous Munich agreement, he demanded 'the destruction of Nazism'. By May 1940, for many it was Halifax, not Churchill, who was the natural choice for Britain's war leader.
