Random photos taken of Purley Way, an out-of-town shopping area arguably the most popular in South London. Ikea dominates the area, a kind of heartbeat to the whole area. If this is a holy place for shoppers then Ikea is the cathedral most come to worship at. And the company's blue and yellow colours are at the top of the two imposing towers, the old chimneys of the power station that once stood there and are pictured.

The skyscrapers of Croydon loom on one side like a poor man's New York; Beddington and Waddon are quiter neighbours. A couple of pictures of Beddington are alos included.

The Purley Way road (a section of the A23 trunk road) was opened in 1925. Did you know that in 1932 Purley Way became the first road in the United Kingdom to be lit with sodium lights?
