Wuthering Heights

William Wyler, 1939

  • Set on the murky, isolated moors in Pre-Victorian England, this adaptation of Emily Bronte's classic novel tells the story of a doomed love between a young, aristocratic woman and the young man who works in her father's stables.

  • This was really intended as a star vehicle for Merle Oberon as Cathy and she is superb but the mesmiric Laurence Olivier in this-is-how-brooding-should-be-in-the-movies role of Heathcliff easily matches her. Thanks to them this film some 70 years after it was made still stands as the definative Wuthering Heights, a million times better than the five big-screen versions that have folowed in its wake. The black-and-white photography just adds to its brooding, haunting quality and the co-stars David Niven, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Flora Robson give solid support.

Passion, seething, brooding, smouldering passion almost howls off the screen like the winds over the Yorkshire Moors.

A must-see movie on a cold, grey Sunday afternoon.

Produced by Sam Goldwyn and directed by William Wyler. Goldwyn later claimed credit for much of what is great about the film ... whatever the truth between the two they have left a piece that is as near to Art that the silver screen can get to.

Though nominated for eight Oscars it only won one for Gregg Toland's black-and-white cinematography. If it had lost out for that then the winning cinematographer would have been someone who was a cross between Leonardo and Michelangelo!
