A determined young woman (WendyHiller) sets off for the western isles ofScotland to marry her boss. He's oldenough to be her father and she doesn'tlove him but he's rich and rich is whatshe wants to be, too. She knows whereshe's going. But virtually on the last legof her journey impenetrable fogdescends and she is unable to reach theisland where her fiance is waiting forher. After the fog comes a storm and that, too, prevents her leaving themainland. In the meantime she has meta young naval officer (the brilliant and irreplaceable Roger Livesey)who is home on leave. He's obviouslyattracted to her, but she resists himbecause he doesn't appear to be richand she's not prepared to be sidetracked by good-looking young men. Thus begins a lyrical, even magical, story which mingles romance, suspenseand comedy with a gentle.touch of thesupernatural. As much as anything itexamines the effect of time and placeon people. The weather disrupts Hiller's plans, but it's the mysteriousambience of the countryside in whichshe is virtually marooned that makesher change them and realise that lifehas more valuable things to offer thanmoney. A small, lovely film, beautifullyplayed and superbly photographed inmonochrome, it has a quality, a kind ofaftertaste, that lingers on in a way thatis almost disturbing and yet whollypleasurable. Rather touchingly, Michael Powell chose the music from the film tobe played at his funeral.
Watch out for a young Petula Clark. See if you can recognise her!
