Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's final film together after an epic partnership that produced such classics as A Matter of Life & Death, The Red Shoes and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

On Nazi-occupied Crete, British officers Fermor (Dirk Bogarde) and Moss (David Oxley), aided by local patriots, are assigned the job of kidnapping the German commander-in-chief General Kreipe (Marius Goring). The operation, if successful, will be an incredible propaganda coup for the Allies. While the abduction goes smoothly, the chase across the rocky Cretan landscape proves anything but.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce beard amid the guns below.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army

John McCrae was 42 when the First World War erupted. A celebrated Canadian doctor, poet and socialite, he led an idyllic life in Montreal Society. As a member of Canada's military reserve, however, he felt it was his duty to fight for the Empire in what he believed to be a just war.

He shipped out as both Senior Medical Officer and Second-in-Command, First Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery. In April 1915 he was caught up in the wholesale slaughter of the Second Battle of Ypres, fighting for what he later described as "seventeen days of Hades" to save the lives of those maimed by shot, shell and the latest horror of warfare - chlorine gas. Amid the carnage, the death of one young fellow officer - Lex Helmer - would inspire him to write the immortal poem 'In Flanders Fields'.

This is the story of that poem, and the story of its author, broken and eventually destroyed by the horrors of war. Combining vivid contemporary film footage and photography with interviews with historians and McCrae's biographers John Prescott and Dianne Graves, it provides an extraordinary insight into one of the most moving war poems ever written.

      Michael Wood

The tales of Troy and its heroes, Achilles and Hector, Paris and the fuelled beauty Helen have enthralled generation upon generation. But did these legendary characters really exist? Was there really a Trojan Horse or a siege of Troy?

In this acclaimed series Michael Wood, vividly evoking the period, searches for the true history behind the myths and examines some of the most exciting discoveries in archaeology,

Homer's Iliad serves as Michael Wood's guide to the past as he sifts through the archaeological, historical and literary evidence. He immerses himself in the excavation site of what is believed to be the city of Troy and examines the dramatic re-discovery of the so-called Jewels of Helen. He tells the story of the colourful characters - like Heinrich Schliemann, the obsessed "Father of Archaeology" or Sir Arthur Evans, physically and mentally exhausted by his digs - who have helped uncover the story. And, he follows the exciting developments that continue to yield new evidence about the historical city.

If official documentation didn't exist, we'd never believe a fantastic yarn and amazing recounting of real-life events like I Was Monty's Double.

At the height of World War II an actor, M.E. Clifton James, was swconded to impersonate General Montgomery. Trained by Major Harvey (John Mills) to imitate Montgomery to the last detail, Harvey then sends the actor on a tour of North Africa to divert the Germans' attentions away from the real "Monty".

An ingenious idea, treated here with a blend of wry humour and total conviction by director John Guillermin. M.E. Clifton James recreates his real-life role and holds his own against a formidable cast including Leslie Phillips, Bryan Forbes (who also scripted) and John Le Mesurier.

Oscar winner Jake Gyllenhaal (The Day After Tomorrow, Moonlight Mile) and Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral) star in critically acclaimed portrayal of a group of young "Jarheads" during the explosive days of the Gulf War. From the Academy Award winning director of American beauty, Jarhead is a powerful story, told with painful honesty and irreverence, with spectacular cinematography.

JARHEAD follows 'Swoff' from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers. Swoff and his fellow Marines, who have been trained to kill, find themselves in a brutal situation, fighting a war they don't understand for a cause they don't fully grasp.

The inspiring true story of a daring raid on the Auschwitz train.

During the Second World War, only one attempt was ever made to stop a train carrying Jewish civilians to the concentration camps.

On April 19th 1943, the XXth Transport from Belgium to Auschwitz was ambushed and stopped by three daring young men armed with just one handgun and seven bullets.

This unique documentary tells the full and fascinating story of one of the most audacious and moving rescue attempts of the Second World War. Using dramatic reconstructions, as well as interviews with survivors and first hand witnesses, it recounts the ambush on the train, the desperate escape attempt and the murderous actions by German guards against the helpless civilians trying to flee.

JEW TRAIN XX also tries to find answers to some of the most painful questions to be asked about the war. Why was this the only rescue attempt? Why did the Resistance never try to stop the deportations? Why were all the rumours about the death camps ignored - and why were Allied bombers never instructed to bomb the railway tracks to the camps? Was it ignorance, disbelief, or something more sinister?

While the French Resistance and others who fought against the forces of Nazism became justifiably famous for their courage and heroism, perhaps less is known about the men and women who resisted Hitler from within Germany itself. There were many who saw it as a solemn duty to assassinate or overthrow the man who had seized power amid a surge of national pride and confidence but who gradually took the country on a bloody path to destruction. The most famous attempt of all to assassinate Hitler came in July 1944. It came to be known as the Valkyrie Plot. A bomb planted in a briefcase and left in a meeting room was supposed to blow the Fuhrer and his henchmen to pieces, but somehow, by a miracle, he escaped death just as he had done on several occasions previously. The plotters paid a terrible price for their failure. This programme tells the true story of the Valkyrie plot and reveals that the plotters were not only driven by their hatred of Hitler but also by a desperate desire to keep the war out of Germany. FREE BONUS DVD 'Hitler's War 1939-1945'. Hitler's dream of European domination that had started in 1939 had, by June 1940, come to fruition as his troops marched triumphantly through the streets of Paris. In the proceeding five years, all that he had built would be in flames and the man himself lay dead in a bunker in Berlin. Using rare archive footage, this documentary depicts Hitler's war and the events that lead to the bloodiest conflict in human history

The mysterious, powerful, warrior knights forever linked with legend and history. An order rounded after the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099AD. Within 200 years the The Templars controlled lands from Scotland across Europe and into Asia. In the early years of the 14th century the Templars were charged with heresy, devil worshipping and other dreadful crimes. Templars throughout Europe were massacred and burned alive. The order was exterminated forever.

Or was it? myths and legends surrounding the extraordinary Templars have endured for centuries. Did some escape the massacres or 1314? Are there Templar Masonic links? did Templars bring the Shroud of Turin to Europe? does vast treasure still exist and do the Templars still guard the Holy Grail?

Filmed on in Europe and the Middle East and illustrated with maps, graphics, and superb illuminated manuscripts this is the definitive history or the Knights Templar.

American produced wartime orientation films made for their troops, 'Know Your Enemy- Japan' and 'Know Your Ally- Britain'.

'Know Your Enemy- Nazi Germany' is a set of four army training films made for British troops as a prelude to their intended invasion of mainland Europe in 1941. The four identification films each focus on a specific area of threat showing graphically what weapons and munitions the British troops were up against.

Preparedness was everything in the face of the onslaught of German armoured cars, tanks, anti tank guns, close-support guns, mountain guns and railway guns- all of which are featured with tactical suggestions as to their weakest points.

Also included is a lession on how to counter German paratroopers and their equipment, and a rather optimistic look at the British weapons that would be used in any counter attack.

Thomas Edward Lawrence, the second of five Illegitimate sons, was educated at Oxford and, from an early age, was fascinated by archaeology. At the beginning of 1914 he took part in an expedition to Sinai where he became fluent in Arabic and developed a deep sympathy for the Arabs who lived under Turkish rule.

In June 1926, after 400 years of oppression, the Arabs began a revolt throughout the Arabian Peninsula to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire. The British supported uprising with arms, money and the presence of 27-year old military intelligence officer, Captain T.E. Lawrence. He proved and inspirational leader and highly skilled at guerrilla warfare in the desert wastelands of Arabia. For over two years he was the guiding force behind the Arab Revolt which would change the face of the Middle East forever. His meeting with American Journalist Lowell Thomas made him an international hero and inspired the legendary film, Lawrence of Arabia.

Drawing on the accounts of Lawrence’s literary masterpiece, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, as well as insight from historians and authors, this is the incredible story of one of the most talented and enigmatic figures of the twentieth century.

Released only two months after the outbreak of World War Two, this was one of the first propaganda films of the time.

Using a combination of documentary footage and well-known actors such as Ralph Richardson and Merle Oberon, it depicts a Germany under the grip of mass-hysteria led by Hitler. This is contrasted to the rural peace of England and the dignity of its inhabitants. Made in two weeks with a minute budget, this is an excellent example of war-time film-making.

The Lusitania was built by John Brown and Company of Clydebank, and was launched in 1906. She was the first British ship to have four funnels, the first steamer with quadruple propellers, and the first ship to exceed 30,000 tons. Such was her size that substantial modifications needed to be made to accommodate her at Liverpool landing stage. The Lusitania was the largest ship in the world, a distinction she held only until her sister Mauretania, entered service two months later.

A fast ship, the Lusitania held both Blue Ribands for Atlantic crossings, setting west bound records in October 1907, July 1908, august 1908 and September 1909 and the east bound record in October 1907.

At the outbreak of World War 1, the Lusitania was at sea but arrived home safely. Unlike Mauretania, the Lusitania was kept in her regular service during the war, and made monthly sailing between Liverpool and New York. However, disaster struck on 7th May 1915, when Lusitania was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20, as she made way off the old head of Kinsal, Ireland. U-20 had struck without warning, and Lusitania sank within 18 minutes. Of those on board, 1,198 were killed and 761 were rescued.

The sinking of the Lusitania has been surrounded by much controversy and debate. U-20 scored a hit with one torpedo, but two explosions rocked the ship. What was the cause of the second explosion? Was she carrying arms? The facility for the British government to requisition the Cunard liners for military use was part of the deal between the shipping line and the government. Or did the sinking by U-20 merely demonstrate that warfare at sea had changed forever, and unarmed merchant ships were no longer safe from attack?
