    • The unexplainable attack on the residents of Bodega Bay by birds of all shapes and sizes is the subject of this classic Hitchcock thriller. Thousands of real birds and nearly 400 trick shots make reality of the seemingly impossible, and lend an air of sheer terror that you will never forget.

Based on the novella by Daphne Du Maurier and written by Evan Hunter, The Birds is Hitchcock at his very best (see full film review).

HIS HEART IS OPEN TO ROMANCE BUT THEY SAY LOVE IS BLIND...

Film originally released in 1928. A silent romantic comedy, The Farmer's Wife rates as one of Hitchcock's less obvious successes. It tells the story of farmer Samuel Sweetland (Jameson Thomas) who has sadly lost his beloved wife. Lonely and with only his long time housekeeper, Araminta (Lillian Hall-Davis) for company, he discusses the possibility of finding himself a new wife to share his home and his life. The loyal 'Minti' agrees to help him in his search for a new companion although her own feelings for Samuel are strong, albeit unknown to the lonely farmer.

Having neither the courage to tell him nor the wish to let him down in his search for happiness, she preoffers her advice and comments on the ladies who come calling - but poor Samuel finds no replacement for his dear departed wife. If only he could see that a new love is within arms reach; a woman only too happy to share his fireside thoughts and her heart with the man she has long since been devoted to.

    • In 1939, the Editor of the New York Daily Globe sends Haverstock (Joel McCrea), a crime reporter, into Europe in the hope of getting a fresh angle. Naive and wholly ignorant of international affairs, Haverstock launches himself eagerly onto the London scene, where he meets and falls in love with Carol Fisher, whose father heads an important peace organisation. Before long, Haverstock witnesses the assassination of a Dutch diplomat at terrifying close hand. Hot on the trail of the killer, he soon finds himself deeply embroiled in the evil workings of an international spy ring. With its unforgettable set pieces and non-stop pace, Foreign Correspondent is one of Alfred Hitchcock's most thrilling entertainments (see full film review).

    • One of Hitchcocks all time classics starring everyone’s favourite leading man Cary Grant, who manages to get mixed up in all sorts of spy business and ends up on the run across country pursued by the police and the spy’s. Along the way we get to enjoy some of Hitchcock's most famous sequences including Grant running for his life from that by-plane and the chase across the faces of Mount Rushmore. So get this disc, pop it in your player, sit back and relax knowing your in the hands of one of the all time greatQuintessential Hitchcock comedy-thriller, with Middle-aged Madison Avenue advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) who is bewildered when he is mistaken for a government agent by a gang of spies. He gets involved in a series of misadventures and is pursued across the States by both the spies headed by Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) and the police (who think he s an assassin) whilst being helped by beautiful blonde Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint). There's one memorable scene after another with the director at the peak of his talent: the now legendary crop-dusting and Mount Rushmore sequences - one of the all-time great entertainments. A witty script by Ernest Lehman and exciting score by Bernard Herrmann complete the perfect thriller.

The film was inspired by a real-life case during WW2 when secretaries at a British embassy in the Middle East, for fun, invented a non-existent agent and successfully tricked the Germans into looking for him.

Hitchcock's Cameo: Missing a bus at the end of the opening credits (see full film review).

    • Alfred Hitchcock amply demonstrated why he was called "The Master of Suspense" with this both witty and macabre tale of voyeurism and murder starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. L.B. Jeffries (Stewart), a photographer with a broken leg, takes up the fine art of spying on his Greenwich Village neighbours during a summer heat wave. But things really hot up when he suspects one neighbour (Raymond Burr) of murdering his invalid wife and burying the body in a flower garden.

Rear Window was among the director's favourite films and is surely one of his greatest achievements. (see full film review).

      Sabotage (1936, B&W)

As early as 1936, Great Britain was suspicious of Hitler's military build-up. In that foreboding atmosphere, England's filmmakers responded to the German threat by making movies that alerted British citizens to the impending danger. The plot of Sabotage is true to the title. As German saboteurs infiltrate England with plans to blow up key industrial and civilian installations, the British spare no effort to trap the Nazis before they can complete their mission. Soon, Sscotland Yard focuses their attention on a small theater, run by the charming Mrs. Verloc (Sylvia Sidney) and her timid but peculiar husband (Oskar Homolka. The Yard plants an undercover agent to investigate the theater further, and with that the conspiracy begins to unravel ...more

      The Lodger (1927, B&W)

The director's first suspense thriller, with a classic Hitchcockian theme: lodger Ivor Novello is accused by jealous detective Keen of being a killer. Memorable finale, in which Novello is chased by a bloodthirsty mob. Also known as The Case of Jonathan Drew. Remade in 1932 (again with Novello), 1944, and in 1954 as Man in the Attic...more

      /SPECIAL EDITION/

Includes a weird introduction by Tony Curtis and a bonus clip of the original theatrical trailer from Hitchcock's 1940 film, Foreign Correspondent, starring Joel McCrea and Lorraine Day. . Digitally mastered from the best available sources for the highest quality possible

Alfred Hitchcock's exciting 1942 wartime thriller stars Robert Cummings as a Los Angeles aircraft factory worker who witnesses his plant's firebombing by a Nazi agent. During the deadly explosion, Cumming's best friend is killed and he, himself, is wrongly accused of sabotage. To clear his name, Cummings begins a relentless cross-country chase that takes him from the Boulder Dam to New York's Radio City Music Hall, and finally. to a harrowing confrontation atop the Statue of Liberty.

Hitchcock's first film with an all American cast moves with breakneck speed towards its spine-tingling climax to create a riveting masterpiece of suspense.

This is just sheer enjoyment from start to finish. A class act on how to make a film and hold the audience's attention for every minute, every second. It's a criminally underrated movie and far better than the more celebrated Spellbound or Rebecca in that it holds you and grabs your by the proverbial throat in every scene. It's The 39 Steps with American accents, if you like, or North by Northwest starring Cary Grant's younger brother. I love this release not just for the feature but also because of the addition of the featurette, Saboteur: A Close Look (2000) as part of the 'Special Features'. Here you have the wonderful Norman Lloyd, who played Frank Frye in the movie, talking about Hitch and the making of the film. In particular, I loved hearing about how the Statue of Liberty finale scene was filmed.

    • Alfred Hitchcock filmed Somerset Maugham's WWI spy story Ashenden with his typical mix of ironic humour and suspenseful set pieces. Novelist Edgar Brodie (John Gielgud) has his death faked by British Intelligence. Giving him a new identity as Richard Ashenden, they persuade him to undertake an espionage commission in Switzerland. Accompanied by beautiful Elsa Carrington (Madeleine Carroll), posing as his wife and the General (the incomparable Peter Lorre), an insane professional killer, Brodie/Ashenden becomes embroiled in murder, intrigue and a pursuit through the Swiss Alps (see full film review).

      Stage Fright (1949, B&W)

In Alfred Hitchcock's world, theatres are where danger stalks the wings, characters are not what they seem, and that 'final curtain' can drop any second. The droll "Stage Fright" springs from that entertaining tradition. Jane Wyman plays drama student Eve Gill, who tries to clear a friend (Richard Todd) being framed for murder by becoming the maid of flamboyant stage star Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich). Filming in his native England, Hitchcock merrily juggles elements of humour and whodunit and puts a game ensemble (Alastair Sim, Joyce Grenfell, Sybil Thorndike, Kay Walsh and daughter Patricia Hitchcock) through its paces. No one turns a theatre into a bastion of dread like Hitchcock, and "Stage Fright" is proof positive.

ABOUT THE DVD: This is a release by WARNER HOME VIDEO for the UK market (Region 2 PAL format - which will play on all standard DVD in the UK and the rest of Europe - buyers outside of Europe will need a multi-region player in order to view this DVD). • Alfred Hitchcock considered The 39 Steps to be one of his favourite films, partly because it launched his classic theme of the innocent man on the run from villains and lawmen. Robert Donat is perfect as Richard Hannay in this freely adapted version of John Buchan's story. For me Madeleine Carroll is a breathtaking blonde heroine - up there and perhaps surpassing all those that came after her. Despite repeated remakes or perhaps because of them, Hitchcock's riveting original remains unequalled (see full film review).
