Having determinedly avowed that UnChien Andalou, his previous collaboration with co-writer andsurrealist artist Salvador Dali, meantnothing at all, Luis Bunuel declared that this second surrealist outing was "a desperate and passionate call to murder". He certainly got his wish, as the film caused riots when it premiered in Paris and was eventually banned atthe insistence of the French fascists for 49 years.
Exploring the themes thatwould sustain his entire career, Bunuel mercilessly pillories the bourgeoisie, with virtually every scene touching onthe conflict between sexual desire andreligious and political repression. Thesatire is both erotic and hilarious andstill has the power to provoke.
Bunuel's fingerprints are all over the script which makes one wonder just how much Dali contributed.
In French with English subtitles.

Bunuel: "Gaston Modot had been a painter and companion of Picasso in 1912. He liked to play the guitar and was very pro-Spain. I noticed him because he was an actor, and a very good actor, too."
The film provoked a right-wing riot in Paris and was banned. It became an underground legend until its re-release some 50 years later.
The film was produced by Charles, Vicomte de Noailles. He would finance an avant-garde film every year for his wife's birthday and this was the present in 1930.
English translation is The Golden Age.
The four archbishops turned to skeletons at the beginning of the film became a fasmiliar motif in Dali's paintings.
One of Bunuel's assistants, Jacques-Bernard Brunius, was almost arrested at the border for transporting the Archbishop skeletons and vestments into Spain for the filming of the Prologue.
