An eye-opener in more senses than one, this great surrealist masterpiece - co-written by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali - still has the power to shock. Starting with an open razor (wielded by Bunuel) slicing a girl's eyeball, this short film goes on to clash lyrical images with violent ideas to show how love is held back by tradition.
Not as meaningless as it seems, and as anti-clerical as Bunuel was to become in all his later films, it still has enormous intensity.

Bunuel was the Man with the Razor which was him slitting a cow's eyeball.
Louis Aragon and Man Ray were two of the first Surrealists to see the film.
The final scenes on the rocky beach were in Le Havre.

Bunuel and Dali both contributed ideas and dreams to the script. Only the elements they could not explain or rationalise were kept.
Bunuel's fiance Jeanne Rucar worked as a production accountant on the film. They would marry in 1934.
Bunuel and Pierre Batcheff had become friends on the set of La Sirene des tropiques. He had been assistant director on this 1927 Josephine Baker starring vehicle and had been shocked at her unprofessional behaviour, something which Batcheff subscribed to. Batcheff would play the lead in Un chien andalou.
