About Parastone

First things first: there are no better Dali sculptures/figures than these Parastone figures anywhere. The attention to detail & the 3d effect breathes new life in the work of the masters, especially, for me, Dali and Bosch.

Parastone was originally part of the famous Borzo art dealership which was founded in 1880 and it primarily specialised in restoring religious art. When, alongside the latter activity, an increasing number of sculptures were produced after own designs, it was decided – in 1963 – to found Parastone as an independent company.

For over 50 years now, Parastone has successfully designed decorative sculptures, partly of timeless classic beauty, partly aligned with current trends. The museum images entitled Mouseion constitute an important part of the collection. Alongside exact copies of important works of art, Mouseion also consists of three-dimensional interpretations of paintings and sketches by many artists ranging from Jheronimus Bosch to Salvador Dali.

Parastone is located in ’s-Hertogenbosch, a historic city in the Netherlands and the birthplace of famous Medieval painter Jheronimus Bosch. Wow, the works coming from where Bosch was from. It's certainly a magical place.

Gala, asleep and floating, feels the threat of the bee-sting, symbolized by the rifle with bayonet. The pomegranate, that probably attracted the bee, can be seen in the foreground and, in a huge version, on the left of the painting. It seems to be the source of the enormous fish with a snarling tiger leaping out of its mouth. In the background the elephant can be seen on long thin legs defying the laws of gravity, a recurring theme in Dali's works (see original picture).

After the Second World War, Dali converted, by his own account, to mysticism. The beginning of the Atomic Era strongly influenced his thinking and led to a strong spiritual foundation for his paintings which he made with a great appreciation for the classic art of painting. The temptation of Saint Anthony originated from an entry for a film poster competition. It shows Dali's nuclear mysticism in all its fierceness. A naked Antonius wards off an frightening mounting horse with a sword, which, standing on legs as thin as gossamer, defies the laws of gravity. The Saint tries not to be seduced by the earthly temptations, symbolised by the horse as a symbol of power, followed by almost floating elephants which carry on their backs symbols of lust and greed. Here Dali dovetails with a classical painter's theme, which before was used by the painters Bosch and Breugel, Dali's surrealistic predecessors. Dali, though, let the frightful temptations act in an alienating world between heaven and earth. However, this "levitation" will later reappear frequently as a theme in his work (see original picture).

The original painting pays homage to America, the country where Dali lived during the Second World War. Against a background which both shows the American deserts and the Amperdan Plaines, stand a white and a black figure, dressed as American football players, facing each other in a dramatic pose. Behind this, under a warning clock, the African continent, from where the black part of the American nation originates, is dripping gloomily.

By his own account Dali wanted to make mankind think about the dangers of major conflicts in the modern world. As a hopeful counterbalance in this sculpture replica, we see the new human, symbolized by the golden man who is balancing the egg on his finger.

Beautifully rendered and constructed of fine collectible quality resin.

Shocked by the dropping of the atom bomb, Dali took a different mystical turning after the Second World War. He combined this new approach with a fanatical interest in the classical art of painting. One year after painting the Portrait of Picasso he described in his "Fifty magical secrets" how surprised he was that people were able to split a nuclear, "but nobody had any knowledge of the substances and the secret juices in which the brothers van Eyck or Vermeer from the Dutch town of Delft used to dip their paintbrushes. In 1948 Dali decided, after a very fruitful eight-year-long stay in the United States, to return to Europe to devote himself to "nuclear mysticism" with the expert motto his insight that the "the skillful arts of painting were developed once and forever and with the greatest perfection and influence during the Renaissance and that the decadence of modern art finds its origins in skepticism and a lack of faith, which is a consequence of mechanical materialism."

Although still filled with Dali-like symbolism, Picasso's portrait has stylistic neoclassical elements. Above the weak torso a portrait comes into existence, composed of alienating elements which strongly reminds the viewer of the 17th-century portraits by the painter Arcimboldo (see original picture).

Dali himself styles his self-portrait as "an anti-psychological self-portrait, instead of painting the soul, or the inner of one-self, to paint solely the appearance, the cover, my soul's glove. This glove of my soul can be eaten and is even a little sharp, like high-bred game; therefore ants appear together with the fried bacon. As the most generous of all painters I continuously offer myself as food and thus give our era the most delicious delicacies." Dali painted this self-portrait during his eight-year-exile in the United States, where he had fled from the Spanish civil war. The sometimes childlike enthusiasm and the drive of the American society appealed to Dali and he had a most productive period there. Under this influence he appeared to reverse his "paranoid-critical" method. Now he painted more from the inside out, as his comment on his self-portrait indicates . (see original picture).
